Built on its own island, Alcatraz operated as a Federal Prison from 1934-1963.
The renowned penitentiary housed some of America's most notorious criminals including Al Capone and George "Machine Gun" Kelly and of course the "Birdman of Alcatraz." This place is an essential element of any trip to San Francisco and will be very memorable. Departures to the island leave from Pier 41 at Fishermans Wharf. Constructed by the U.S. Army Corps to prevent the entrance of a hostile fleet into San Francisco Bay, Fort Point National Historic Site is now visited by more than 1.5 million people every year. During WW2 the fort was occupied by 100 soldiers who manned rapid fire cannons. Designated as a National Historic Site in 1970.
